When I first completed this piece in April I wasn’t very keen on it. I’m not sure why. I wasn’t even planning on doing a blog post about it. But today I took another look at it and I warmed up to it quite quickly.
I think I love the curves the thumbs created and the thick pads on the thumbs as well. I don’t know. The more I look at it, the more I like.
The hands are in the shape of a heart and Omnis means All. Meaning love is for all. There’s not much more to explain. I originally did a drawing for this when the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris first happened. I didn’t want to acknowledge or give any attention to the actual attacks as being bombarded with everybody posting it on Facebook was just annoying me. I wanted to make a statement to the victims and not recognize the perpetrators. So I just drew the hands and put the colors of France’s flag in the center. I think people understood.
I decided to redo this drawing and make a painting as well, but just the hands and no flag colors. It was a bit difficult because I’m not use to backlit subjects and didn’t feel competent about my skills. I think that was why I did not initially post this piece on the blog. But give it a couple of months! That’s what I did and just looking at it now, I can look at certain parts of the painting, like the curves, and truly appreciate it. Time doesn’t just heal all wounds. It also births new appreciation (and love).
