Scotland’s PAWS performed Tuesday evening at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn. The trio were punchy, intense, and powerful. The crowd, a bit light in attendance, showed some love though, as they shouted for more after their late set. It was nice to see some guys just having fun and enjoying themselves.
Initially a four piece, the trio began their ascent into anti-folk via a lo-fi garage sound with serious and thoughtful lyrics set against a guitar, bass, and drums combo. Check out the video below of the guys performing ‘Sore Tummy’ a tune that starts off soft and sweet, eventually erupting into melodic strains and fuzz, full of violent, erratic jolts.
Opening up for the night was synth-rock trio Dinowalrus and Ovlov, who I’m digging with their brilliant guitar, fierce drumming, and sweet bassline.
PAWS will be playing Wednesday night at the Cake Shop, as well as a few more East Coast dates, before they head off to SXSW and finally to Europe. It looks to be a busy couple of months for them, so if they’re playing in your neck of the woods, you should definitely check them out.
