Wild Beasts and Mutual Benefit at RiverRocks 2014, 10 July 2014, New York City

The annual Hudson River Park’s RiverRocks festival opened this season Thursday night with Mercury prize nominated Wild Beasts from Kendal, UK.  Opening up for the Brits was the wanderlusting mind and creations of Jordan Lee and company in Mutual Benefit.

The UK pop band could be easily regarded as 80s influenced with singer Hayden Thorpe’s falsetto mellifluously uttering lyrics set to guitars and keyboards.  Their electronic sound set to an easy tempo made for a very danceable set, or at least some steady head bobbing.

Mutual Benefit had more of a softer, folk feel with dual violins that added a nice touch to the collective’s sound.

The music continues this weekend at the South Street Seaport on Friday with Protomartyr and Alvvays and the annual 4Knots Festival with headliners Dinosaur Jr. on Saturday.
